Woodcutter's Grim Series, Book 1: Papa (Paranormal)

Score: 5.00 (votes: 2)

For the ten generations since the evil first came to Woodcutter's Grim, the Guardians have sworn an oath to protect the town from the childhood horrors that lurk in the black woods. Without them, the town would be defenseless...and the terrors would escape to the world at large.

Less than a year after Randall Parker left his family for elementary school teacher, Amy, the unthinkable happens--his ex-wife and two children are killed in a car accident. Ever since the accident, Amy has had terrible nightmares in which Rand's son and daughter return to exact revenge on their father and Amy herself for abandoning them. When Rand convinces her to come away with him for a healing respite to an isolated cabin in the woods, Amy's guilt-filled nightmares turn into pure horror.

5 Angels! "Are you looking for a creepy, hair-raising tale? This book has it! Even though the story happens around Halloween, it doesn't need to be Halloween if you are in the mood for chills! I would like to suggest that you might want to leave an extra light on when you sit down to read this, just in case... Papa is a twisted reversal of the Hansel and Gretel story I grew up with. This story is off the creepiness meter. I had chills down my spine reading this one. Do not read this story at night, alone, and especially not in a cabin in the mountains! If you love the scary ghost stories you probably used to hear around the campfire when you were a kid growing up, then this is the story for you." ~Fallen Angel Reviews
5 Stars! “I freely chose to review this book and now I can't wait for the next! Ms. Wiesner's retelling of the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel with a twist will make you hunger for more." ~Linda’s Reviews
5 Tombstones! "Everything I hoped it would be. A clever, spine-chilling story that made me unable to stop reading. The characters are outstanding and unique. The eerie tale of Hansel and Gretel has just gotten more chilling. The characters were unyielding individuals with strict beliefs. Just when I thought I had figured it out, the book turns and it throws all my first conclusions out the window. It kept me on my toes. This is a truly Halloween inspired revamp to an old fairytale." ~Bitten by Books
4 Hearts! "Karen Wiesner gives the reader a spooky grown-up tale reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel in Papa with a trip to a village where time stands still in a truly scary excursion. An enjoyable read." ~The Romance Studio
4 Wings! “A Halloween romp of fun and shivers. Papa is a story of fear, terror and Christian peace in this story of a newly married couple that is haunted by his dead children. Their second honeymoon takes them to Woodcutter's Grim, a town of magic and terror that leads them to Hansel and Gretel's Gingerbread House deep in the Woods. There the two of them remembered God's love brings peace and forgiveness, not pain and guilt. These tales are wonderfully crafted, and fun-filled with the joys and traditions of the season woven into them. The characters come alive and celebrate this holiday each in their own way in these stories. With the gingerbread house that puts people to sleep, this tale shows people not always at their best but doing the best they can at this time of year in an interesting adventure. I really enjoyed this and look forward to more from this favorite author. If you enjoy this holiday as much as I do, pick up this book to settle back for a good read.” ~Classic Romance Revival
"Papa is haunted by a guilt that even love is powerless to cure. A couple's romantic getaway to Woodcutter's Grim (an effort to discover themselves and subsequently perhaps find freedom) turns into one hell of a nightmare. Anyone keen on a counterbalance of love, horror, murder and apparition will have a feast." ~TCM Reviews
"A wonderful story to be told by moonlight on Halloween! Randall Parker only sees the ghosts of his children after Amy falls ill and refuses to leave the apartment. He takes her to Woodcutter's Grim where time stands still. Karen Wiesner chills Halloween night with the story Papa. Definitely read every Halloween night when ghosts return to haunt." ~Rolling Seas Reviews
4 Stars! "Papa is a chilling interpretation of Hansel and Gretel in the romantic horror novella by Karen Wiesner, where Randall and new bride Amy are haunted by specters of his deceased children." ~RT Book Reviews
"Papa is a creepy tale of a man who hears his children crying after they die in a car wreck. Curl up with a copy on Halloween to have a spooky night. Fairy tales take on a new look in the hands of this talented woman." ~Writers Unlimited
"In this is a dark and disturbing tale, guilt only serves to feed the terror. The darkness of the theme is enhanced by many images: from tombs, accidental death, endless grief and a place called Grim. Sin and guilt form a backdrop here, as well as the specter of a pact with the devil. It starts dark enough, but the growing awareness of a true horror waiting just around the corner will make even hardcore horror fans cringe." ~ Long And Short Reviews

I freely chose to review this book and now, I can't wait for the next! Ms. Wiesner's retelling of the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel with a twist will make you hunger for more, Are the Black woods haunted and what about time stopping or no one in the town when Randall and Amy Packer arrived in town? I am so glad that Randall stayed and looked for his wife and am glad that Amy put her trust in him even though she had sinned with Randall, but is the evil ready to let them go?
